Precious Antiques in warm light
Fourth Dimension Lighting Design light up this intimate luxury interior design shop
Barrs Yard, on the outskirts of Hungerford, has five relatively new retail units, one of which was being used as a fashion shop.
When this retailer moved their business online the unit was taken over by Burrwood Interiors of London who wanted a showroom for their stunning collection of antiques and interior design business.

The Challenge
The space consists of a ground floor with a mezzanine reached by stairs at the back of the unit. The unit, as a fashion shop, had a light and airy feeling with the ceilings painted in white which reflected the light from the large front facade.

The existing lighting consisted of a pair of industrial style high bay lights and LED cluster spots mounted to the underside of the mezzanine ceiling. Whilst the reflected light from the facade created excellent light in the front part of the shop, the light towards the back of the unit was inefficient and the LED clusters created a lot of glare.

It was clear that with the change to an interior design and antique shop a very different approach would be required.

Our Approach
Our client wished to radically alter this with darker colours to create a backdrop for their antiques and fabrics. They were also going to display a number of antique table lamps and lanterns so the architectural lighting was to complement and not overwhelm the decorative lighting.

Our first approach was to use downlights recessed into the mezzanine ceiling. This was thought to be too inflexible and whilst we would have preferred to avoid track lighting, we eventually opted for miniature track fittings from the Italian manufacturer Exenia.

We decided to control the lighting with Casambi which enabled the client to have control of each individual luminaire and to create groups for scene setting and to balance the light with the natural daylight at different times of day.

The Finished Project
The interior has been completely transformed with the architectural lighting working beautifully to complement the decorative lighting displayed within the room sets.
